Jim and Catherine Gowans are lifelong farmers who operate their home farm, Omnivore Acres in Central Saanich. Many folks know their farm shop, where they market custom pork, lamb, chicken and eggs from their pastures.
They are also known for their weaner piglet sales every spring. Jim is a livestock nutritionist (UofA) and Catherine a retired Registered Nurse (UVic)
Having used the Braun abattoir for many years, Jim and Catherine decided to buy the business in January 2018 when former owners retired. Small crafting abattoirs on Vancouver Island have their origins in the family farm where local animals were processed for local farmers. Jim and Catherine feel the abattoir is a vital community asset.
Since purchasing the abattoir Jim and Catherine have invested in new equipment, technology and staff to ensure our community is well positioned for the future.
In August 2019 Braun Custom Meat Processors completed additional upgrades to develop a fully licensed cutting room.
Over the years the market for local meat has steadily increased along with the number of year-round livestock producers requiring processing services.
